Lois Williams "Lois Williams grew up in Cefn, near St Asaph, N.Wales. Throughout her career she has articulated the way a Welsh background flows into her work. This articulation of a particular 'Welsh' content can be interpreted in a variety of ways. It is seen most obviously in the way her work makes references to spoken and written language. It is also present when we think of more general associations in her work. We must ask ourselves how much that which is distinctive in her sculpture is due to 'Welshness' that would not recur should it be transferred rhetorically to another location. Conversely, how much of the apparent 'Welshness' is due to the signifiers of separate and distinct culture - farming, Celtic yet Methodist, trapped between suburban and rural - which happen to all, being characteristic of her part of Wales."
